Title: Performing the Icon, 2015-2016. Now part of Wesley Theological Seminary Art Collection, Washington DC.

Mixed media installation: video projection, sound, wood panel painting (Gold leaf, emulsion, and pigments).

Description: This installation explores the visual-spatial elements that are used by Byzantine iconographers to construct an iconic vision. I do so by alluding to a Byzantine mode of performing icons in a church in relation to fictional pop icons. My artistic attempt is to see how Disney animated characters and Apple products can be presented as if true (Byzantine) icons in the physical space of a gallery. To that end, this installation tests the limits of my artistic vision in crafting new icons by combining elements of light, sound, a traditional hand painted object with religious symbolism/narrative, and contemporary digitally projected imagery.
