Title: THE IMMANENT LIGHT: WATER GILDING

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

This 2-day workshop offers an opportunity to discover the ancient Byzantine iconography through the concise project of water gilding. The instructor will provide traditionally prepared icon panels (ready for gilding and painting). There will also be a brief explanation of the Byzantine canons (rules) of painting to understand the artistic theology and symbolism behind the icon and its relevance to contemporary artists. For example, the rule of reverse perspective, which distinguishes the Byzantine icon from the Renaissance religious paintings, will be discussed. This workshop is suitable for students of all artistic abilities—no previous iconographic skills are required.

OBJECTIVE

  • Develop a technical understanding of water gilding and learn how to use gold leaf to create a mirror like surface.  The gilding demonstration will clarify all the required steps enabling the student-artist to learn a new artistic technique. This learning process will be put into practice through hands-on experience of materials, from grinding, sanding, and burnishing the bole to applying the gold leaf.

STRUCTURE:

1. Introduction to the Byzantine iconic technique (the meaning of canons).
2. Students select their icon to copy.
3. Tracing the icon.
4. Preparation of the bole and careful application of the gold leaf.

MATERIALS REQUIRED

The instructor will provide all the iconographer’s supply (traditionally prepared icon panels, gold leaf, gilding tools, brushes, etc.) for a fee payment.
